Astronomy
Mercury is the fastest little planet in our solar system.
It is the nearest to our Sun and is the smallest planet, and travels around the Sun once every 87 to 88 days, travelling at around 2000 km per hour.
You will find that as mercury is sat right next to the Sun, it cannot be seen unless you view in the morning or at twilight.
A Solar day on Mercury last for 176 Earth days, which is twice as long as mercury’s orbital period which as stated above is about 88 days.
Therefore a Mercury year is about 0.5 Mercury days long, and one Mercury day last for around two Mercury years.
Mythology
Our planet was associated with the Greek god Hermes.
Mercurius was a messenger, and God of trade (particularly grain), profit and commerce, the son of Maia Majestas, also known as Ops; the Roman version of Rhea and Jupiter.
His name relates to the Latin word Merx, i.e. Merchandise, Merchant, mercari (to trade)and merces (wages).
It seems that the majority of Mercury traits, characteristics and mythology were borrowed from Hermes.
There was an actual temple to Marcury built in Rome in 495 BC at the Circus Maximus, between the Avatine and Palatine hills; the Circus Maximus was a racecourse and a centre of commerce.
As a God he did not actually appear among the “numinous” (gods), “di indigetes” of early Roman religion. (Di Indigetes were Roman deities and Gods not adopted from others mythologies.)
Mercury was classed as “di novensides or novesiles“, which was a newcomer god, which are found in ancient and early Christian literary texts and prayers.
Apparently he took on the earlier Dei Lucrii, (the early gods of wealth, profit, commerce and trade) as Roman religion was merged with Greek religion around the 4th Century BC.
Astrology.
I see Mercury as the speedy quick minded messenger of the zodiac, mercury has no sexuality; it neither he, nor she, and is such is neutral and is simply a messenger with no loyalties whatso-ever.
Mercury rules the curious side of the sign Gemini and the analytical critical sign of Virgo, which also extends in rulership towards the natural 3rd house in your birth chart, which related towards all form of communication from talking to texting, to emailing in modern times.
Your natural 6th house is also taken into consideration as the natural house of Virgo, which is a lot more down to earth than Gemini. In this house the organisation factors that come into play when trying inject some routine and order into life.
All planets can function positively as well as negatively, so as well as Mercury been seen as some kind of Godly messenger, and looking to it, in a chart when you are expecting a really important life changing phone call; I also perceive it as being a bit of a liar, trickster and conman.
If you have many planets in either Gemini or Virgo, then, the chances are you are very active minded, and get bored a bit too easily, and will have many projects on, at the same time.
Business Astrology.
In business the mythology shows that Mercury is the trickster son of Zeus, or in Roman mythology, Jupiter.
He/she is the archetype of rapid change and has rulership over the spoken and written word, advertising and printing
Mercury is said to stand out strongly in the charts of teachers, trainers, and writers, especially writers who specialise in short articles, presentational material and anything that is quick and witty.
A company or business with a strong Mercury in their chart might just have links towards sales, telecommunications and advertising.
It is a very good sign to see a good strong mercury placement in any business chart, by planetary position and by aspects, as it shows good communication faculties within the organisation, with the business finding it easy to process information and convey it to staff, employees, management and the public.
